Rathmines is regarded as one of Dublin’s coolest areas. Although it may seem shameful that it remains so under-appreciated, the residents who love it are happy it’s there. This is an ideal place for travelers looking to discover Dublin off the beaten track.
Rathmines has become a popular hangout spot for Dublin’s younger crowd, including myself and my friends. You should definitely make a visit to Dublin if this is something you want to do. Here is my guide of the best things you can do in this trendy area.
An overview of Rathmines
Rathmines lies approximately 3 km from Dublin’s centre. You can easily reach it by public transport, or you can take a leisurely walk of about 30 minutes if the weather is pleasant. Rathmines is home to everything you need, from shopping and food to entertainment and clubbing. Rathmines offers a great nightlife.
This is Dublin’s playground for creatives and students. It gives it an energetic, youthful vibe. This area is perfect for anyone who wants to get away from the tourists and crowds of the city center. It is easy to navigate Rathmines as well as the rest Dublin using trams or public buses. You can download the bus app for up-to date information about schedules and fares.
Although taxis are more costly than public transport, they can often be faster and more convenient. You’ll be able to get great information from your local taxi driver. Let’s look at the best things to see in Rathmines.
Blackbird is the best pub in Dublin. Blackbird has been a favourite spot in Rathmines for my friends and me. It is always our first stop during a night out. The interior is mysterious and broody, and all that’s visible are antique lights and candles. I love this bar for its laid-back vibe and chill atmosphere.
A pool table, board games, and the perfect Friday evening playlist will keep you entertained. Drinks and food are also very reasonable. The perfect deal: a combo of a pizza, a pint, and a beer for 12 Euros. This is a very popular spot among locals, especially the young crowd.
Early arrivals are recommended to ensure a spot and to secure a Jenga set. Blackbird is available every day from 16:00 till midnight, and on weekends until 01:00.
Copan, which is a bit more formal than Blackbird, is more suitable for evenings when you feel like dressing up or having cocktails. The bar is elegant and modern and is located right in Rathmines.
This is a great choice for dinner, and if you’d like to speak to your dinner guests. Copan is well-known because of its unique design features. They draw inspiration from Mayan hieroglyphics. The restaurant is usually open Monday through Friday from 16:00 – midnight, and on Saturdays until the early morning.
Copan is the best time of year to visit. On Thursdays, Fridays and Sats, a DJ comes in to make everyone dance with an exotic cocktail. It’s a good idea to book a table during peak summer seasons.
The Stella Theater, one of Rathmine’s most important institutions, is the Stella Theater. This cinema was originally opened in 1923. It is a cultural landmark of Dublin. It was recently restored to the 1920’s glamour. The Stella, Ireland’s largest cinema, had a huge ballroom at the top of the first floor.
Although the architecture and design are theater-quality, the cinema continues to be in use. Tickets can be purchased online or listed for the rolling films. Stella Cocktail Club upstairs, which has taken the place the original ballroom, is a highlight when visiting the theater.
The bar boasts a breathtaking view of Rathmines and also has a charming little terrace for you to enjoy your cocktails. Both the theater as well the cocktail bar remain open all day.
This is the best place in Dublin for Thai food. Camile Thai brings Thailand’s best cuisine to Rathmines. They use high-quality, fresh ingredients and have highly talented wok chefs.
Their goal is to bring people closer in Thai culture. The chef only uses grass-fed pork and beef. Seasonal vegetables are sourced locally. There is no MSG added to the food. This makes it an excellent business to support.
Camile has branches in Dublin. Our favorite is the one located in Rathmines. Open hours are between 11:00 and 23:00.
ICS charity shop
Rathmines’s best kept secret is the ICS Vintage Charity Shop. The store isn’t well known, and that’s a shame since they have so many beloved treasures! You can find a large selection of vintage goods at the shop, including clothes and household items as well as art pieces.
Not only will you find wonderful souvenirs from your Dublin visit at bargain prices, but it will also allow you to support a great cause. The ICS is a group which operates shops throughout Ireland to raise funds and support their various causes, including homeless people and refugees.
You can also donate clothes to the clothing donation bank in Dublin. The Rathmines store can be found from 10:00 to 17:00, and up until 20:00 on Wednesdays.
Mother Reilly’s Barr
Mother Reilly’s is another bar that should be included in the Top 10 Best Places in Rathmines. It’s part of Uppercross House Hotel. This is a cool place to go if your looking for something different at night.
There’s always something happening at this bar: live music performances and live streamed sport games. There are many local beers and wines on tap, and the restaurant offers great light meals for a snack while you enjoy the entertainment.
Dublin Sessions will keep the you up-to-date on all the upcoming Mother Reilly’s events. Make sure to visit their website often so you don’t miss out!
Dundrum is Dublin’s best-known shopping destination. Dundrum is actually a suburb. However, it’s so close by Rathmines, you can consider Dundrum part of this neighborhood.
This large shopping center houses more than 100 shops as well as a variety of cafes and restaurants. There are 12 screens of cinema, a bar, nightclubs, and even a theater. You will never run out of entertainment here. Dundrum, if the weather doesn’t permit you to visit the city and you want indoor activities, will keep you busy throughout your day.
The award for Ireland’s Best Family Friendly Shopping Center was won by the center for the last three years. Parents traveling with children will enjoy the many child-friendly activities Dundrum offers. Shops are open everyday from 10:00 to 19.00 and the food court till 21:00.
Two Fifty-Five Square
Two Fifty Square, an industrial-style coffee shop in Dublin’s warehouse style, is a cool place to grab a coffee. The interior is super Insta-worthy with its stripped back elements of bleaches wood, metal and Scandinavian-inspired color scheme.
You can imagine the amazing aroma! Two Fifty Square is an oasis of calm, just off Rathmines’ main road. This makes it the perfect spot for a relaxing cup of specialty espresso or to do some work for digital nomads on the go.
A dog-friendly outdoor seating area is available. The cafe is available from 08:00 till 18:00 every day.
